Beagle

It was a beagle named Mistie who was the first dog registered at Mistie Acres Kennels (MAK) in 1965. I spent the first nine years of my life with her. It was decided by Sharon Brown and CL Brown to open an AKC kennel. In 1974, THE FORTY was purchased just outside of Okmulgee Oklahoma. In that same year, a trailer house was moved to the site, and we broke ground for MAK. That same year, our kennel name was registered with the AKC. Sharon then joined the Kennel Club in Muskogee, Oklahoma, where she attended her first AKC conformation competition. A Labrador retriever named Could be Somedays Black Watch became MAK's first Champion , Kilt. At age 3, Kilt finished for his championship with majors in Dallas, Tulsa, and Wichita. Using Kilt as a foundation, MAK bred four more champion labs, earning the title of Owner/Breeder/Handler, the only award awarded to a human by AKC. CL and Todd wanted a versatile gundog capable of hunting ducks and upland game. With his superior breeding from Shamrock Acres Kennels, Kilt met all the requirements. Shamrock produced Duel Champion labs that exceeded all the expectations. Taking Shamrock Acres Kennels as an example, MAK aimed to breed not only great gundogs but great companion dogs that looked good as well. The beagle was our first love. While CL had run beagles as a kid, he had never run AKC dogs. By the 1980s, the AKC beagle had almost lost its hunting ability due to the breeding of Traditional Brace dogs. As a result of the Brace beaglers' efforts, the breed had been reduced to a slow plotting tracker for use in Field Trial simulations. As hunting beagles began to reappear in the early 1980s, AKC set up a format for promoting these qualities in field trials. The Small Pack Option (SPO) movement was born, along with strong AKC licensed federations that put on conformation shows to improve the type and look of the beagle. In the SPO format, Mak has finished 9 field champions, with 4 being owner/breeder/handler titles. Todd became a licensed judge in 1996 and we continue to compete in SPO field trials. MAK acquired its first Wirehaired Pointing Griffon (WPG) in 2007. A conformation bred WPG, Ash was the first Griff at MAK. He was able to transition into fieldwork with ease. MaK's first female, Redbud was an extensive field bred with Navhda titles. MAK learned from these two Griffs that the WPG was the best companion gundog money could buy. We hope to finish a duel champion in this breed in the future. Furthermore, we hope our pets are athletic and capable on the field. Ideally, we seek dogs who are versatile, loving, and willing to work. The training includes ducks, pheasants, geese, and upland birds as well as how to find, point, and retrieve game. It is important that the dogs be able to account for fur in the tree or whole and track blood, along with being able to find sheds in the spring. In Oklahoma, there is still a MAK presence with Sherie and Jackie and their beagles, Griffs, and livestock protectors. Our main location is in Goshen, Arkansas in Madison County, and CL. & Sharon have retired to Monte Ne, Arkansas on Beaver Lake with their Labs. There is now a third generation of MAK in Southern California with Tanner Brown. MAK has a training enclosure of 20 acres (dog tight) with cottontails and quail. For training and raising MAK dogs we use Richard A. Wolters' Water Dog, the Bible of dog training books. MAK operates according to the Houndsmen's Code of Ethics. We guarantee 100% satisfaction for the life of the dog. In the unlikely event of health or behavioral problems, we will provide a replacement. We appreciate your interest in Mistie Acres Kennels.
