Colorado Bernese Mountain Dog - A Tailor Made Match

Bernese Mountain Dogs (or Berners as they are called) is a breed that originated in the Swiss Alps in the town of Berne. They were bred as all-purpose, cold-weather farm dogs and are pretty much tailor-made for Colorado.

This long-haired breed has a loving gentle face and is obedient, loyal, and hard working. Berners are large and sturdy with an average height of 25-27 inches and an average weight of 50-70 pounds. They have long muscular bodies with thick tri-colored coats, usually black with white and brown markings.

The easygoing and steady nature of the Bernese Mountain Dog makes her perfect as a pet for Colorado families. This breed is gentle, calm, and patient and therefore does well with young children. However, Berners can be slightly aloof with strangers, although they are hardly ever aggressive.

If you’re thinking of bringing a Bernese Mountain Dog into your Colorado home, know that early socialization and training is important for these pups. Also, given that this is a relatively large sized dog, you’ll need to make time for at least 30-60 minutes of moderate exercise for your pooch every day.

You should discuss diet and nutrition for your Bernese Mountain Dog with your vet. This breed is prone to joint issues and may need a special diet to slow down growth and prevent joint problems.

Given their long coat, Berners shed moderately throughout the year, but their thick coat is particularly well suited to the cold climate in Colorado. The ideal Colorado home for a Bernese Mountain Dog is one that has open space where the dog can expend its energy and explore (Berners don’t do well in an apartment home). Of course, they also need dedicated pet parents who will spend time playing and training them, but they are generally an easily trainable breed.

Overall, if you bring a Bernese Mountain Dog into your Colorado home, you can expect an easygoing, patient, calm companion who is devoted to your family. Puppy Hero has listings of several ethical and responsible dog breeders in Colorado from whom you can source your Bernese Mountain Dog.

Bernese Mountain Dog

Relentless Ranch is located in Basalt outside of Aspen, Colorado on a 2,600-acre ranch at the base of magnificent Mount Sopris, the Northwestern Elk Mountains range of the Rocky Mountains. The ranch is a perfect spot to raise Bernese Mountain Dogs, with plenty of streams, ponds and pastures to run in and explore. A place where true Bernese Mountain Dogs belong. The Relentless Ranch Bernese Mountain Dogs love the mountains but also love competing at the AKC confirmation shows in the Western United States. From living in the mountains their coats are especially thick and shiny, and their bodies are strong and muscled. As one judge said at the show, “That Bernese Mountain could pull my milk carts all day long”. What the breed was original bred to do as farm dogs in Bern, Switzerland. For 17 years we have focused on showing and training and have gotten into breeding the last 8 years. We currently have 9 adult Bernese with 5 boys and 4 girls. We are fortunate to have 3 Grand Champions from our lineage and 4 Champions that are nearly finished. Relentless Ranch dogs love playing in the mountains or roaming the ranch, but all are house dogs, usually underfoot or trying to climb into your lap, and are great companions and need to be next to you whenever possible. We usually have a couple of litters each year. The puppies get complete genetic testing to insure their good health and all are covered with health insurance along with required shots, microchips, etc. before they go to their new homes. All new owners are required to send me pictures and keep in contact. Once you see our Dogs you can see why one is never enough! We encourage all prospective puppy owners to do their research and be prepared with questions to ask the breeder. Make sure you are not only choosing the right breed for you, but also that you’re getting it from the right individual. Thank you!

Bernese Mountain Dog

I have been breeding AKC Champion Bernese Mountain Dogs since 1994, and am a Bronze Breeder of Merit. Sound temperament and health are high priorities. I believe strongly in pedigree research and health screening, and enter all of my dogs and litters in Berner-Garde - the online health and pedigree database that is available to everyone at no charge. I am very active with my dogs - competing in AKC conformation, herding, obedience, rally, and BMDCA draft. Although I breed to produce healthy, high quality puppies, most of my puppies are placed as pets. Colorado homes are preferred - I do not ship puppies to new homes, they must be picked up in person from my home (I do have puppies that live in CA and CT, because their owners were willing to travel to me). Trixie (Tanzanite Learning Magic Tricks) has been bred for a litter that would be due mid-August 2021 - will ultrasound in mid-July to confirm pregnancy. There is a chance Jade (GCH Tanzanite Jade Glade HSA-s FDC NDD) will be bred in the fall - or possibly Inca (GCHS Tanzanite's Incommunicado) who was Best Opposite Sex at Westminster Kennel Club in June 2021. They both turn 4 years old this year, and have yet to have a litter. My main goal with this listing is not really to sell puppies - instead, it is to help show buyers what responsible breeders do to earn their puppy prices. My website has photos of Berners who were both bred to meet the Breed Standard, and also bred to be healthy. If breeders are charging high prices for their puppies, buyers should have proof of extensive health testing on the parents. The Tanzanite website is an example of high standards for health testing - because that is what is most important to most puppy buyers.

ALICIA PALMOS-MIDGETT is from Colorado and breeds Golden Retrievers and Bernese Mountain Dogs of the very highest quality. We breed an average of 2 litters per year. Pups are raised on a 43 acre ranch with lots of room to run, and plenty of socialization with other dogs as well as kids. Several of our pups are being trained and used as therapy dogs. We test our breeding dogs for healthy eyes, hearts, hips and elbows, and also test for breed specific genetic illnesses. Our golden male, GG Marcus Aurelius, is gorgeous, gentle and kind. He is conformationally outstanding, and has a large blocky head. A couple of our females are daughters of European champion males which we have imported from Ukraine, Serbia, and Poland. We also have a couple girls which were born here in past litters and now are having litters of their own. AKC proudly supports dedicated and responsible breeders.
