Boston Terrier

Thank you for considering one of our Boston’s. Please enjoy this introductory letter as I tell you more about our breeding program and why a Patriot Farm Boston Terrier is your best choice. Our application is at the bottom. Having been a medical professional for 35 years, I now raise and show my Boston Terrier’s full time. My husband Denny and I breed traditional Boston Terriers that adhere to the standard for showing. We make every effort to produce puppies which capture the essence of the breed with an emphasis on sound structure and blue-ribbon good looks. We currently title all our dogs through IABCA. At these shows we enjoy the one-on-one critique with the Judges. We also show a few of our dogs at AKC events local to us. We selectively breed to better the dogs in our breeding program and we routinely look for bloodlines to help improve our overall quality. We prefer a more diverse gene pool and avoid inbreeding and linebreeding for better health. Some of our bloodlines carry the dilution gene and liver gene, so occasionally we could produce coat shades of dilute black and liver on our dogs. These were some of the original colors of Boston’s back in the 1800’s. These shades of Boston’s are not only popular but are also recognized and registered with the AKC. They can compete in AKC sanctioned agility and obedience competitions though only the standard color can compete in AKC Conformation class. We love all Boston’s, appreciate the diversity in the breed and embrace their origins in color just as much as the standard colors. Even though we aspire to breed AKC Champions, ‘OUR GOLD STANDARD’ is to start with a foundation worth building on. Our Breeding dogs are screened for HEMIVERTEBRAE and SPONDYLOSIS and the desired DNA is NEGATIVE/NON-CARRYING of the testable diseases of JHC, DM, HUU, CDPA & CDDY with IVDD in addition to BAER and CERF certification, patella exam and heart auscultation. Whether for my own breeding program or for someone else’s, pups appearing to be show hopefuls, undergo this rigorous testing as well. During the first eight weeks of life our puppies are snuggled daily and exposed to household noises. They play in a puppy enrichment area and receive Early Neurological Stimulation to help develop a good immune system and coping skills later in life. Nail trimming starts at two weeks of age - this protects them from accidentally scratching one another and keeps their mommy comfortable as well. Pups are weaned between 4-6 weeks of age. During the weaning process, the pups are exposed and encouraged to use a simple doggie door sensitized with Athena’s Pets potty bells into an elimination area of pine shavings (as seen on my website). When you pick up your pup, he or she will be pre-registered with the AKC and also Microchipped with the AKC Reunite for life program. I will give you a free sample of Nu-Vet vitamins, which boost the immune system - we encourage these vitamins for life as a part of your puppy’s nutritional needs. We also give you a complimentary set of Athena’s Pets Potty Bells and a sample of shavings to use in your yard to encourage use of the designated areas you choose for your pup to use for elimination. Planning for your puppy makes perfect sense. When you make a reservation, it puts you in control of your selection. We prefer non-impulse adoptions to help ensure the best homes possible for our puppies. Most families can expect to be on our reservation list for at least a month but can be longer. Puppies are typically chosen between 3 and 10 weeks of age. This gives us ample time to raise and evaluate our pups to determine which will go to a waiting family. Many clients plan to bring their puppies’ home around vacation time which allows for a smooth transition into their lifestyle. Most of our pups are adopted as family or personal companions with Limited registration. Some will go as show/breeding hopefuls and have Full AKC privileges and NO contract restrictions. Being a responsible breeder, we are always here as a resource to the families who get one of our Boston’s and we give back to our community through canine rescue organizations. We provide safety and shelter for our dogs and have offered shelter to others during the hurricane season. We are always hurricane-ready with a generator, enough food and water for 3 weeks and adequate transportation for us and our pets to evacuate on a moment’s notice. Besides finding the best homes for our Boston’s, we also measure our success through the quality of life of our dogs and the happy retirement of our Sires and Dams. Having a true breeding program with several dogs is about growth and selection over time through the generations. Each of our dogs has an individualized showing, breeding and retirement plan. Breeders who breed AKC registered dogs are held to a higher standard than any other Registry. AKC Breeders are regulated and inspected yearly in person by official AKC auditors. Breeding wonderful Boston’s with purpose and intention and meeting the AKC’s standards is an honor and a privilege. Our greatest achievements are not merely measured by our ribbons or awards, but indeed by the happiness brought to the lives of the families who choose one of our Boston’s.
