When winter comes around, some dog breeds like Siberian Huskies, Alaskan Malamutes, and Newfoundlands can cope pretty well because their coats are made to compensate for the cold weather. However, dogs with thin coats can develop frostbite and hypothermia in frigid Idaho temperatures if you’re not careful. You’ll need to give your doggo some warm bedding, check her paws regularly, and make sure her skin (especially exposed parts) is not dry and itchy. Also, be careful when you’re shoveling snow – if you stack it up against a fence, your dog may use it to get away. Lastly, be careful of antifreeze in your driveway or in puddles – it tastes sweet but is highly toxic for dogs.
Equally important is keeping your pet cool during the hot Idaho summer. Heat exhaustion and dehydration can happen quickly. Make sure your four-legged friend has plenty of fresh, cool water to drink. Avoid going out between 10 am and 4 pm when the sun is at its hottest – instead, restrict outdoor activity with your dog to the early mornings or late evenings during the Idaho summers.
