Scott and I have been members of the Portuguese Water Dog Club of America (www.pwdca.org) and officers of the Great Lakes PWD Club (www.greatlakespwdclub.org) for the past 12 years. Scott is a previous President of the GLPWDC. David is a UKC All Breed judge and currently a nose work trainer at Canine Karma. He is in many performance trials for agility, scentwork, barnhunt, CAT, FCAT, PWDCA water trials, rally and obedience. The American Kennel Club has awarded Mariposa with the coveted AKC Breeder Award of Merit for two breeds. We got our start in the PWD breed about 13 years ago with Inara who is our foundation bitch. We have been in dogs for over 25 years but primarily with English Springer Spaniels. Mariposa is a preservation breeder and their dogs over the years have earned more than 70 champion and performance titles in 15+ countries. At Mariposa we breed FIRST for sound temperament, health and structure. Health test certifications are available upon request for both the dam and the sire. This is a philosophy we carry in all the dogs we have bred as many of our dogs have gone onto search and rescue teams, bomb and drug interdiction and medical alert for private homes. All our puppies are checked by our veterinarian before they leave for their new home. Vaccinations begin around 10 weeks and we use Dr. Jean Dodd's vaccination protocol. All our litters are registered with the American Kennel Club and we formally name each puppy. We temperament test our puppies at 7-8 weeks in a neutral location and we do a structural test at 8-9 weeks with a third party PWD expert. This gives us a better understanding of each puppy character and how they will be when they are adults. It helps us to place each puppy in the right home and which puppies we as breeders should consider keeping. It's important for people to buy from established, reputable breeders who have a track record of success with their dogs, who keep healthy dogs from good bloodlines, and who practice hands on rearing of pups and lots of supervision. If for some reason we cannot help you with our litter we can introduce you to other like-minded breeders who are members of the Portuguese Water Dog Club of America.
