Coton de Tulear

I’m Beverly Kohler. In my lifetime I have breed only the Coton de Tulear. Other dogs I’ve had as pets were a Miniature Schnauzer, Siberian Husky and a German Shorthair Pointer. I started with my first Coton “Oscar" in 2001 and we showed in the “Rare Breed Shows.” The breed gained AKC recognition in 2014. My love is showing in conformation and also Rally Obedience. AKC Kennel Clubs have so many great venues for these activities as well as agility and many other activities for dogs. I am a member of the Gig Harbor Kennel Club, and all breed club and also the United States Coton de Tulear Parent Breed Club. My profession is as a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner. I enjoy studying dog genetics, structure and movement and reproduction, which has no end for learning new things. I have been a long time member of our AKC Parent Breed Club, the USACTC and breed education mentor as well as being on the breed standard committee and have contributed in writing the AKC Breed Standard for the Coton. I am a member of The Gig Harbor Kennel Club, which is an AKC all-breed club in the state of Washington. I have bred several Champions prior to AKC recognition in 2014, and a American, Canadian CH, AKC GCCh, World Winner Sugar Bay’s Beringer 2012 in Salzberg, Austria, GCH Sugar Bay’s Beamer Over the Moon, Jr. Vice World Winner 2015 in Milano, Italy and Best of Breed winner at our Parent Club's Supported Entry at the Eukanuba AKC National Championships 2015 with 28 Cotons entered. GCH CHSugar Bay’s Beringer took Best of Opposite at Westminster 2017, then his daughter GCH CH Sugar Bay’s Cate Blanchett won variety Best in Show September 2017, Best of Opposite twice at the AKC National Championship 2018. Two have AKC Rally Advanced titles. Other accolades have been Multi-CH Sugar Bay’s Mademoiselle Monet, BOB Canadian National Specialty winner, and multiple Best of Breed wins at Regional Specialties and multiple group placements in both the variety groups and National Owner Handled Series. GCH CH Sugar Bay’s Cate Blanchett is #1 NOHS for the Coton de Tulear in 2018. Recently GCH CH Sugar Bay's Dotted Swiss, Cate's sister, won Best of Breed at the Westminster Dog Show 2021, and also at the AKC National Championships in Orlando, Florida. My dogs are great show dogs and also great pets. They are all with mein the house and it’s just like a having a bunch of kids. The Coton is a great breed. They have a dry coat (means no dander and no odor.) They are loving, not hyper and they are happy doing what you are doing. They don't tend to be destructive even as puppies. Downside is if you're keeping them in full coat it requires frequent brushing. I like to encourage people to show in conformation or in performance events like agility, rally or obedience and would be very happy to help if you don’t have any experience. Sometimes people say they just want a pet, and really there is no differnce other than getting a Coton that looks like a Coton. They are all pets. -Bev
