We are a small but lively farm in northwest Wisconsin that lovingly raise a variety of animals, focusing on health, disease clearance testing, and temperament. Avalon is a small hobby kennel located in South Wayne, Wisconsin. I am a retired veterinarian and I have been showing and breeding Standard Poodles for over 40 years. I am dedicated to improving the Standard Poodle breed. I have had dogs compete at the highest levels of conformation, agility and service work. I do extensive health testing and I try to breed dogs that are beautiful to look at and also functional. My colors include black, blue, white and occasionally silver. Brenda Nelson is from Wisconsin and breeds Poodles. Here is her story: "I grew up in Sheldon, WI. My Aunt and Uncle bred miniature poodles, and one Christmas they gave our family the pick of the litter as a gift from them. We asked them for the quietest/calmest one of the litter, which they identified immediately. We took that puppy home, even though my Dad was grumbling all the way home about not wanting a dog. We named the puppy “Sam” and he was such a comfort to me and one of the biggest blessings to me as a child growing up. He was what some people call, “the dog of a lifetime”. Sam quickly mastered house training, and also learned how to jump through hoops, sit up and beg, dance in circles, winning the hearts of everyone who was around him, even my Dad and my Grandpa, who didn’t especially like dogs. We kept him well-groomed and clean, so he was always attractive and enjoyable to have around. As a young girl, in grade school, I entered him in 4-H Dog Obedience training where he progressed from Pre-novice to Novice to Graduate-Novice, taking Showmanship classes as well, where he consistently excelled in winning just about every competition that he was entered in. He learned to stay lying down while I went out of sight for 5 minutes, and would not move until I returned and gave him the command to heal and sit. Through this experience, I learned how to groom him and take care of the basic needs that Poodles have, including cleaning his teeth regularly. This love for poodles has carried on into adulthood for me, and it is this love that has given me the desire to breed Poodles, and provide the best quality and tempered pets for others to enjoy as much as I have."
