Losing a dog is every pet parent's nightmare. One moment, your puppy is happily exploring, and the next, they've slipped through an open gate, chased something into the woods, or wandered farther than expected. When that happens, being able to locate them quickly can make all the difference.
GPS dog trackers have already made tracking your dog much easier, but they have one important limitation: many rely on cellular networks to send location information back to your phone. If your dog runs somewhere without cell service, that connection can disappear when you need it most.
In this article, we take a look at how satellite technology could help change that and, in particular, how Starlink's Direct to Cell technology is opening up new possibilities for connected devices, including pet trackers.
To understand why Starlink could be useful for lost dogs, it helps to look at how a traditional GPS tracker works. A GPS tracker uses satellites to determine where your dog is. However, GPS alone doesn't normally send that location to you. The tracker also needs another form of connectivity, such as cellular service, to transmit the information to your phone.
However, if your dog escapes while you're hiking in a remote area, runs into the countryside, or wanders beyond the reach of a cell tower, a conventional tracker may struggle to send you their latest location.
Starlink's Direct to Cell technology is designed to help address that connectivity gap. Starlink says its satellites can connect with compatible LTE devices and provide connectivity outside traditional cellular coverage.
For dog owners, the potential is obvious. When a dog goes missing, a tracker could determine their location using GPS, and then satellite connectivity could be used to send that information back to you, even when conventional cellular coverage isn't available.
Fi's newly launched Fi Ultra uses T-Satellite with Starlink alongside T-Mobile's network to help keep dogs connected when they move outside standard cellular coverage. According to Fi, the tracker can automatically switch between LTE and satellite connectivity, allowing owners to continue receiving location information when their dog is in an area without normal cell service.
The device also uses GPS to determine the dog's position, while satellite or cellular connectivity is used to communicate that information. Fi says the Ultra is designed for remote adventures and can provide satellite connectivity in areas where standard cellular service isn't available.
For a dog who loves exploring, that could be a significant safety advantage. Imagine your Labrador bolts after a deer during a hike. Instead of immediately losing contact when your phone's cellular network disappears, a satellite-enabled tracker could continue communicating its location. That's the kind of technology that could give concerned owners a little more peace of mind.
This is where it's important to separate the potential of the technology from what is available today. Starlink has ambitious global connectivity goals. Its Direct to Cell network has expanded beyond the U.S., with Starlink reporting more than 650 Direct to Cell satellites deployed during 2025 and partnerships with mobile operators in multiple countries.
However, that doesn't mean a Starlink-connected dog tracker can currently be used everywhere on Earth. For example, Fi's support documentation specifically states that Fi Ultra is designed for use within the United States and that its satellite connectivity does not currently extend internationally.
So, for now, "across the world" is better understood as the direction this technology could take rather than a promise that owners can track their dogs anywhere on the planet today. As satellite-to-device networks become more widely available and more countries approve services, however, international pet tracking could become increasingly realistic.
There are several situations where satellite connectivity could be particularly valuable. Many dogs love joining their owners on hikes, camping trips and outdoor adventures. But these are also places where cellular coverage can be unreliable. A satellite-connected tracker could help bridge that gap.
In rural areas, a dog doesn't have to be miles into the wilderness to lose cell coverage. Particularly where there are fewer towers or difficult terrain. Satellite connectivity could give trackers another way to communicate.
Perhaps the biggest benefit is simply knowing that you have another layer of protection. A microchip is still incredibly important because it can help identify your dog if they're found and taken to a shelter or veterinarian. An ID tag is equally valuable for immediate identification. A tracker serves a different purpose, in helping you locate your dog while they're still out there.
Satellite connectivity sounds almost like a perfect solution, but there are still practical considerations. Battery life is one of the biggest. GPS and satellite communications can use considerably more power than lower-energy connection methods. Fi notes that its Ultra has a battery life of around two to three days, depending on use, and offers power-saving features to extend it.
Satellite connectivity also doesn't mean unlimited, uninterrupted tracking in every environment. A tracker still needs suitable conditions to communicate with the network, and service availability depends on the technology, network partnerships and regulatory approvals in a particular location.
And, importantly, GPS tracking is not a replacement for good dog ownership. Secure fencing, reliable recall training, a properly fitted collar and up-to-date identification details are still essential.
We're not quite at the point where you can guarantee tracking your dog anywhere in the world. But the arrival of satellite-connected dog tracking in the U.S. shows that the future is already starting to arrive. After all, when you're out hiking in rural or remote areas and your four-legged family member decides to go on an unexpected adventure, the more ways you have to find them, the better!
