Belonging to the AKC’s Sporting Group, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are bright and affectionate dogs that were originally used as water dogs to hunt and retrieve ducks from the chilly waters of the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland.
This breed is known for its sturdiness, stamina, and strength. While Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are fine hunters’ companions, they also make wonderful companions for active and experienced dog owners. However, novice pet parents and apartment dwellers may not be the ideal families for Chesapeake Bay Retrievers.
In terms of size, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are 21-26 inches tall on average and weigh anywhere from 55 to 80 pounds. They live for 10-13 years.
Personality wise, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever is quite affectionate with family members and can do reasonably well with young children and other dogs in the family. This is a highly trainable breed with high energy levels and mental stimulation needs. Chesapeake Bay Retrievers also have a moderately high tendency to bark.
While not aggressive, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever will be slightly wary of new people. This is a playful breed but not a dog that wants to play all the time. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever’s protective instinct makes him a good watchdog. These dogs are quite adaptable to changes in routine too.
In terms of the grooming care effort and time commitment you will need to make, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever’s medium length wavy or wiry coat requires 2-3 brushings a week and sheds moderately. They are not very likely to drool, however.
All in all, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever is an affectionate, active, energetic dog with all the characteristics of a retriever, including a waterproof coat. They not only make excellent hunting buddies but also great family pets.
