English Cocker Spaniel Dog Breed Information

If you’re looking for a medium-sized dog with a merry disposition and an energetic and happy nature, then consider the English Cocker Spaniel. Belonging to the AKC’s Sporting Group, this breed, lovingly called the Cocker, was originally bred to hunt woodcock and other types of birds in Britain.

The modern-day English Cocker Spaniel is a loving and responsive family pet standing 15-17 inches tall on average and weighing around 26-34 pounds. The English Cocker Spaniel has an average life expectancy of 12-14 years.

In terms of personality, English Cocker Spaniels are the quintessential family dogs, very affectionate towards family members and exceedingly good with young children, plus they get along well with other dogs in the household too.

In addition, the English Cocker Spaniel is quite open to strangers, playful, and adaptable, which pretty much ticks all the boxes and makes these dogs beloved family pets. The English Cocker Spaniel has a moderately protective nature and can function as a guard dog but is not the most vigilant breed out there.

In terms of grooming needs, English Cocker Spaniels have a silky medium to long double coat that sheds moderately and needs to be brushed 2-3 times a week. Cockers are not big droolers but they do bark on occasion. English Cocker Spaniels are very trainable. They have moderately high energy levels and mental stimulation needs.

All in all, if you want a compact sporting dog with instantly lovable melting eyes, lush ears, a silky coat, a sweet temperament, and an eager to please nature, then the English Cocker Spaniel might be the perfect breed for you.
