German Wirehaired Pointer Breed Information

If you’re looking for a versatile hunting dog that can hunt game on every terrain and retrieve on both land and water, then the German Wirehaired Pointer (GWP) fits the bill.

This is a breed with an excellent sense of smell and great stamina, which makes GWPs a favorite with hunters all over the world. But German Wirehaired Pointers also make great family pets for active families.

If you’re looking for German Wirehaired Pointer puppies for sale, here’s some important information you should know about this breed.

On average, German Wirehaired Pointers stand 22-26 inches tall and weigh 50-70 pounds. They are slightly taller and heavier than their cousins, the German Shorthaired Pointers. GWPs generally live for 14-16 years.

In terms of family life and personality, German Wirehaired Pointers are very affectionate with family members and do reasonably well with young children and other dogs in the household. They are playful and quite open to strangers. This breed can adapt to changing schedules, etc., and can therefore thrive in a busy family. However, this is not the ideal breed if you live in an apartment, given the size of the GWP. A German Wirehaired Pointer can make a reasonably good guard dog too.

This breed is eager to please and very trainable. Prospective owners of German Wirehaired Pointers should know, however, that they have extremely high energy levels and require daily mental stimulation to stay out of trouble. So, you have to be prepared to devote the time and effort necessary to provide an outlet for this energy.

In terms of barking level, German Wirehaired Pointers are moderate, neither too vocal nor too quiet. This breed does have a strong wanderlust potential and needs to be kept on leash or in a fenced yard.

The German Wirehaired Pointer’s medium length, wiry, double coat is relatively easy to groom with 1-2 brushings a week. They are moderate shedders and low to moderate droolers.

If you’re looking for a muscular, agile, resilient dog that loves a good run in the great outdoors, then the German Wirehaired Pointer might be the perfect breed for you. Can’t wait to bring a GWP puppy home? Check out the listings of reputable breeders of German Wirehaired Pointers on Puppy Hero.
