Jack Russell Terrier Breed Information

The Jack Russell Terrier, also called the Parson Russell Terrier, is a breed that was developed more than two centuries ago in England for use in foxhunts. The modern-day Jack Russell Terrier is a lively, friendly, inquisitive dog who is eager to please. Bred as working dogs, Jack Russell Terriers are tireless, which makes them wonderful pets to have on working farms in addition to being excellent family pets.

In terms of appearance, the Jack Russell Terrier has a compact body, standing approximately 10-12 inches tall and weighing 9-15 pounds on average. They have a wiry or smooth short coat that sheds moderately, but these dogs have relatively low grooming needs and are less likely to drool. But what attracts many people to Jack Russell Terriers are their intelligent expressions, characteristic V-shaped ears, and beautiful almond-shaped eyes.

Personality wise, Jack Russell Terriers are very affectionate with family members and do reasonably well with young kids. They are likely to get along well with other dogs in the family too. They are a lively, alert, and inquisitive nature and are always up for an adventure with their family.

Jack Russell Terriers treat everyone like their best friend, including strangers, but their protective nature makes them reasonably good watchdogs. They are very playful and have lots of stamina, which makes them ideal for active families and families with kids. The adaptability level of the Jack Russell Terrier is on the higher side and this dog can adjust quickly to changes in weather, living conditions, schedule, etc.

While they are moderate shedders, the good news is that Jack Russell Terriers typically require nothing more than a good weekly brushing to keep their coat healthy. In addition to this, like every dog breed, the Jack Russell Terrier’s nails should be kept trimmed and ears cleaned periodically.

If you are a couch potato, this is not the breed for you. A Jack Russell Terrier has high energy levels and stamina and needs lots of outdoor activity such as bike rides, hikes, or long walks on a daily basis. It’s worth remembering, however, that this is a terrier breed with a high prey drive, so it’s important to socialize Jack Russell Terriers early to ensure they are well behaved as adults.
