Shiba Inu Dog Breed Information

Originally bred as a hunter’s companion and retriever in Japan, the Shiba Inu is the smallest of the native Japanese breeds, standing 13-17 inches tall and weighing around 17-23 pounds. The standout characteristics of this breed are an alert and attentive nature, a cat-like agility and nimbleness, a high-spirited and bold personality, and a foxy appearance (many people think this breed looks uncannily like a stuffed toy).

If you’re looking for Shiba Inu puppies for sale nearby, here’s some key information you should know.

Shiba Inus are robust, adaptable dogs that can thrive with families that live in apartments as well those who live in larger homes. They are a reasonably good choice for novice dog owners. This is a breed that can tolerate being alone when you’re at work, so they’re also a great choice for people who live alone or families in which no one is home for some periods of time. Additionally, this breed adapts well to cold weather, and less so but reasonably well to hot weather.

A properly socialized Shiba Inu is affectionate with family members and reasonably kid friendly and dog friendly.

The Shiba Inu’s short double coat can shed quite a bit and requires occasional brushings, say once or twice a week, so that’s something to keep in mind in terms of devoting time to grooming. Shiba Inus are not big droolers though, so that’s good news. On the other hand, they do have a tendency to bark and they can be quite mouthy.

Shiba Inus are intelligent but can be challenging to train because of their strong-willed temperament, which can be frustrating, especially if you are novice pet parent. Additionally, this dog has a strong prey drive and wanderlust potential, so will need to be kept on leash or in a fenced yard.

Shiba Inus are pretty much middle-of-the-road in terms of playfulness, exercise needs, and mental stimulation needs. They can therefore adapt to active and laidback lifestyles both.
