How Long Do Hot Dogs Last in the Fridge?

Yes, we know hot dogs have nothing to do with our furry, four-legged friends, but hey, we’ll answer all your “dog” questions nonetheless.

Do hot dogs go bad in the fridge?

Hot dogs will ultimately go bad in the fridge. However, you can safely store an unopened pack of hot dogs in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Once you open the package, hot dogs are safe to store in the refrigerator for one week.

Also, you can freeze hot dogs. While frozen foods are safe indefinitely, for the best quality, experts recommend freezing hot dogs for no more than 1-2 months.

Do hot dogs actually expire?

Yes, hot dogs expire. Be sure to check the expiry date or use by date on the package. Eating hot dogs that have not been properly refrigerated or are past their expiry date can cause serious illness.

How can you tell hot dogs are bad?

Raw hot dogs that smell sour, have a milky, gray or brown appearance, or a slimy texture have gone bad and should be tossed. Eating hot dogs that have expired or gone bad can cause severe food poisoning.

Frozen hot dogs that show freezer burn (the meat looks shriveled or discolored and the surface is covered in ice crystals) may still be safe to eat but these hot dogs will not be the best in taste or quality.
