The official state dog is the Alaskan Malamute, but it’s not the most popular dog breed in Alaska. The top three spots are taken by the Lab Retriever, German Shepherd, and Golden Retriever. Let’s take a look at these popular Alaska breeds in more detail.
The Alaskan Malamute is an imposing looking dog that is native to the state of Alaska with arctic roots dating back thousands of years. It is an iconic working sled dog that is most comfortable working in a pack or team. If you are looking for a loving, loyal, sweet, and energetic family dog, you might want to consider a cousin of the Alaskan Malamute – the Alaskan Klee Kai, which has a considerably smaller stature – but the Alaskan Malamute is also a great choice.
Now, the Lab Retriever. It's not surprising that the Labrador Retriever is a popular breed in Alaska. This is a breed that is a traditional Newfoundland waterdog, commonly seen as a fisherman’s companion and duck retriever. The Lab Retriever’s short, dense, weather-resistant coat is ideal for Alaskan weather, and the thick tapering tale (otter tail) serves as a powerful rudder in water. The Labrador Retriever has the ideal disposition to be a loving companion with an intelligent, gentle, kind, and non-aggressive nature.
Another popular dog breed in Alaska is the German Shepherd – an intelligent and loyal dog that is relatively easy to train. However, the dog’s loyalty and temperament depend on the amount of work you put in during puppyhood. If you can’t make up your mind between an Alaskan Malamute and German Shepherd, perhaps consider an Alaskan Shepherd, a breed that combines the best of traits of these hard-working and well-behaved dogs.
Given the extreme weather conditions in Alaska, there are certain things pet parents must keep in mind. You will need to keep your pet indoors to protect them from the cold weather. If the pet is kept in an outdoor dog house, there will need to be adequate protection from the wind, rain, and snow, and adequate insulators and blankets. Also, you will need to check water bowls regularly and break the ice or refill as needed. Keep in mind that your dog may need extra calories to produce body heat in the Alaskan winters.
