Maryland was the first state in the US to designate an official state dog in 1964. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is the state’s official dog to date. But there are other popular dog breeds in Maryland, including Labradors, German Shepherds, and Golden Retrievers. Here’s some more information about these popular Maryland dog breeds.
Chesapeake Bay Retrievers in Maryland: This is a working dog that was bred as a waterfowl retriever for hunters. It’s one of the few breeds that originated in the US. The story goes that in the early 19th century two dogs of a Newfoundland breed were rescued from a shipwreck off the coast of Maryland and bred with local coonhounds, ultimately evolving into the present-day Chesapeake Bay Retrievers.
Labradors in Maryland: One of the most popular breeds in the US and worldwide, Labradors are loved for their good nature and gentle temperament. Historically, this breed was a fisherman’s helper in the chilly waters of the North Atlantic. Today, Labradors are search and rescue dogs, assistance dogs, show competitors, and excellent companions and family pets for Maryland residents.
German Shepherds in Maryland: This is a highly intelligent and loyal breed that can be trained to be excellent guard dogs in Maryland.
