Some dog breeds are instantly recognizable and widely known, such as Dalmatians, Labradors, and French Bulldogs. There are also many dog breeds available worldwide. But, did you know that there are some rare dog breeds? These precious breeds are disappearing before our eyes and these endangered dog breeds are often very distinct with distinguished histories.
So, how do we save these rare dog breeds on the edge of extinction?
There are numerous reasons why some breeds become rare. One reason could be due to a change in work, as some breeds are for specific working roles that are no longer required, such as hunting and herding. Changes can result from urbanization, changes to land use and hunting bans.
Some dog breeds have become extinct because of changing lifestyles, a lack of promotion, or a lack of awareness. Particular declines happen when new breeds become more popular, especially with the rise of designer breeds.
The Otterhound, a vulnerable dog breed from the UK, is one of the most endangered dog breeds in the world. As you can imagine from the name, it hunted otters back in Medieval times. It is good at swimming with webbed feet and a waterproof coat. Their decline has been largely because they are a high-maintenance dog and the ban on otter hunting.
This spitz-type breed from Norway is now a rare dog breed used to hunt puffins. They are also good in water with the ability to close their ears in water. They also have five toes! A narrow gene pool has resulted in inbreeding concerns, and puffin hunting is now illegal.
This charming breed of dog from Scotland is a vulnerable dog breed. They are sweet, intelligent, and good with children, a lovely dog breed. However, there are other more popular terrier breeds, so this little fluffy sausage-shaped dog, with a fluffy topknot, is at risk of being lost. The breed is named after a fictional character from a novel by Sir Walter Scott.
The Skye Terrier is an endangered breed from Scotland. Again, the breed is overlooked as it is not as fashionable as other terriers. It has long hair and an elegant, glamorous appearance. Few puppies are registered annually. They are loyal dogs but can be stubborn.
The sloughi, also known as the Arabian Greyhound, is found in North African countries. It is an ancient breed that is rare. It was used for traditional hunting methods. These sighthounds can be aloof and take time to warm up to strangers. They have an elegant and sleek body.
The Azawakh is an ancient dog breed from West Africa. This breed is slim and elegant. You can see the bones and muscles through the skin. It is an uncommon breed used for hunting. The Azawakh has cultural significance as well and is one of the fastest dog breeds, having been bred to hunt gazelle.
The Lagotto Romagnolo is a traditional Italian dog breed that has been used in the past for hunting with excellent water retrieving skills and also sniffing out truffles. Once quite rare, it is being re-established and is increasingly popular as it is hypoallergenic and highly-trainable. They are generally loving and loyal dogs.
The Chinook was bred in New Hampshire in the 19th century as a sledge-pulling dog. They are a rare, large breed with a calm and friendly temperament, provided they are trained early.
For some breeders, especially those who breed rare or endangered dog breeds, it is a passion, responsibility, and an essential role that they have in preserving a dog breed for future generations. You can help ensure that breeds don’t die out by selecting the right breed for your situation and family setup rather than picking a breed because it is popular or a cultural icon. Research breeds carefully, and if there is a dog breed that’s native to your region, why not consider it?
Well-bred dogs from responsible breeders can come with a significant price tag, but they should also share a wealth of knowledge with you about the breed and have done genetic and health tests for both parents and puppies. They should also have begun socialization for the puppies and bought them up in a home environment.
Good breeders, especially of rare breeds, will likely collaborate with clubs and other breeders to ensure standards are maintained. If the dog is AKC registered, breeders will adhere to the AKC standards for the breed and breeding as well.
If you own a rare breed, you can help the breed by getting involved in events that publicize the breed and share about your beloved pooch as well if you feel comfortable doing so. You can attend events like county shows and dog shows and educate people who meet your dog on the breed.
There are many dog breeds around the world, and over the years, the most popular dog breeds change as trends shift. As a result, breeds can become rare or even endangered. Some breeds have even become extinct over time. Once numbers dwindle, genetic problems can arise. However, dedicated breeders are trying to preserve rare breeds and maintain breed standards for future generations.
If you come across a rare breed or one that is local to you, consider giving a home to one that needs a lifeline to keep the breed going and help keep rare breeds alive!
