Many famous dogs have made it onto our screens, either in films or on TV, or famous dogs from history. Dogs have been loyal companions for thousands of years in our homes and working alongside us in many different roles. But many dogs enjoy being in the spotlight. So let's take a look at some of the famous dogs in movies and famous dogs in history and see how many you know!
An iconic star is Lassie. The 1943 film Lassie Come Home stars a rough collie as a heroic dog. It went on to become a TV series, books were written about the famous dog Lassie, and there have been multiple remakes. Lassie was loved because the role she acted out was that of a heroic dog that was always rescuing someone in danger or warning someone about danger.
Audiences fell in love with this heroic character and became known as a loyal and intelligent dog.
Toto is a famous dog character from the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. Toto is Dorothy's brave Cairn Terrier. This little dog again has a role of courage and loyalty, and is a much-loved and recognisable little dog. The character of Toto is also in the original books, and everyone loves this sweet little character.
Another one of many famous dogs in history is Hachikio. Hachikio is a well-known Japanese Akita that is a symbol of loyalty and devotion. This brave and loyal famous dog waited at the Shibuya train station every day for his deceased owner. He did this every day for nearly 10 years. And his tale has been turned into a film starring Richard Gere called Hachi: A Dog’s Tale.
A well-known animated dog is Scooby Doo! Scooby Doo is a Great Dane featured in the Scooby Doo Show, a cartoon mystery series for children. A features a group called Mystery Inc., who solve monster mysteries, which includes this beloved pooch. Scooby Doo is known for always eating lots of snacks! He had a cowardly but humorous personality, but was much loved, and his friendship with the character of Shaggy makes him one of the most well-known and iconic dog characters on TV.
In 1992, the much-loved film, Beethoven, was released. This film is centered around Beethoven, a slobbery, chaotic, and lovable Saint Bernard, and the adventures that his family has with him. This comedy film is much loved by children as they have enjoyed watching one of the most famous dogs in movies, and he also starred in several sequels.
The 1957 Disney film Old Yeller is a beloved movie of courage, selflessness and bravery. The story is set in the late 1860s during the frontier days in Texas. The film follows a young boy and his family, and his relationship with Old Yeller. It is a Western drama film, based on a book, and has become an iconic story in America.
Although it has moments that will bring a tear to your eye, especially at the end of the film, it is a real tear-jerker. And this emotional and endearing story remains one of the most famous films in American film history. The type of dog in the film is a Black Mouth Cur, and in the film is played by a Labrador Retriever and Mastiff mix.
One of the most famous dogs in scientific history is Laika, a Terrier Husky mix and Soviet space dog that was the first living creature to orbit the Earth aboard Sputnik 2 in 1957. Although she did not survive, she paved the way for human spaceflight.
Doug the Pug is a celebrity dog who lives in Nashville, Tennessee. He has millions of followers on social media, across Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube. He has his own merch line and has starred in music videos. He is loved for his cuteness and the humour that he brings into people's lives through the social media posts he stars in.
Buddy was a celebrity Golden Retriever who starred in the 1997 film Air Bud as a basketball-playing dog. He was very skilled at basketball and eventually brought football, soccer, and volleyball to the canine world. He quickly became a family favourite as a dog famous for playing sports on the big screen. And was associated with the famous line: “There ain’t no rule that says a dog can’t play basketball!”
Bo and Sunny were the Portuguese Water Dogs of the Obama family. They were famous as First Dogs and were beloved by the American public as they represented the White House as being pet-friendly. They were playful with photogenic characters and so became famous during Barack Obama’s presidency.
There are so many famous dogs in movies and famous dogs in history that we couldn't possibly list them all. Others we haven't mentioned in Santa's Little Helper in The Simpsons, Perdita and Pongo in 101 Dalmations, Frank the Pug from Men in Black, and so many more you can probably think of!
Famous dogs capture our hearts with their adorable actions and incredible feats, and for many celebrity dogs, provide comedic relief. These dogs exhibit the best qualities of man’s best friend; they often demonstrate loyalty, bravery, humor, and unconditional love. These larger-than-life celebrities remind us of our own adorable dogs and puppies.
These dogs might be stars in Hollywood, on the small screen, or historic personalities. They can make you laugh, cry, or stand in awe, and their stories often demonstrate the strength of the bond between humans and dogs and the trust and loyalty that can develop between people and their dogs.
